    <summary><![CDATA[Looking south toward Peoh Point and South Cle Elum Ridge, the Chicago, Milwaukee &amp;amp; St. Paul Railroad depot is seen located and the end of the street.  With the coming of the C.M.&amp;amp;S.P. Railroad in 1909 the depot was constructed and the community of South Cle Elum grew quickly as several small wood frame businesses were built.  Alvin M. Gerber&amp;apos;s saloon on the right was located next to E. A. Ryan&amp;apos;s barber shop.Postcard titled: &quot;Milwaukee Depot. So. Cle Elum, Wn.&quot;]]></summary>

The present two story, brick structure located on the northeast corner of Ruby Street and Sixth Avenue was erected in 1919 during the ministry of F. E. Billington.     <summary><![CDATA[Though these firemen posed proudly before a parade in the years around 1910, their hand-drawn and pumped hose cart was almost useless against a major wind-driven blaze, conclusively proven in 1918.  The department acquired its first truck, a used Maxwell, in 1923.]]></summary>

Mr. James Thomas was the principal.  Mr. C. G. Holm was hired so students would be offered three years of high school.  The building was enlarged about 1918.Postcard dated April 19, 1911.     <summary><![CDATA[The first two story wooden frame hospital was destroyed by fire in July 1908.  The land was donated to the miners and people of Cle Elum by Walter J. Reed.  In 1909, a newer, larger brick hospital was rebuilt on the same site by contractors Don Perrow and Orb Barnett.  Dr. Stimpson of Roslyn was the chief surgeon who was assisted  by Drs. Kiehl and Newgard from Cle Elum and Drs. Phelp and Payne from Roslyn.  The nurses quarters were opened in the building in February of 1909.Postcard titled: &quot;Cle Elum Hospital, Cle Elum, Wash.&quot;]]></summary>

Paul, a contractor, constructed the two story brick building on the corner of E. First street and Harris Avenue.  Also housed in the building were the offices of Attorney Short, Cascade Lumber Co. and the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company.  Charles Fell moved the Cle Elum Miner-Echo Newspaper into the rear of the building.     <summary><![CDATA[With the discovery of coal in the foothills around Cle Elum in 1884 and the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1886, many miners, farmers and lumbermen had already established a thriving community when Walter Reed plotted 60 acres of land and named the town Cle Elum, the Indian word meaning &quot;swift waters.&quot;  Looking east on First Street from the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue, two of Cle Elum&amp;apos;s major streets, many brick and wooden structures can be seen.  The Central Annex built in 1909 on the southeast corner was an addition to the Central Hotel to the right of the annex.
