This article describes the tensions that arose from the unexpected arrival of a large contingent of Mormon women - known as the Blue and White Coalition - that arrived at the Washington State Women's Convention on July 8th, 1977 in Ellensburg, Washington. The Coalition would square off against Feminists and Liberal women who would take opposite sides on the Equal Rights Amendment ratifications discussed at the event, in regards to topics such as abortion and rights for homosexuals. The article goes on to talk about Jill Ruckleshaus, past member of the National Women's Commission, and questions she posed to the conference participants regarding issues facing women today.

Many of these unexpected attendees were attributed to the instructions given by Mormon leaders to many LDS followers to go and stand against the Equal Rights Amendment ratifications that were being discussed at the event.

This article discusses how a large contingent of Mormon women, officially called the "Kennewick Chapter of Women", showed up to participate in opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment in the Washington State Women's Conference on July 8th, 1977. Also discussed is the surprise move from Jill Ruckleshaus, and her withdrawel from the slate of 24 candidates chosen to attend the National Women's Conference in Houston the following November. Instead, she asked her supporters to fully endorse the full slate of candidates developed by the Equal Rights Amendment supporters. Six other women would follow suit in this matter, in direct opposition to the Blue and White Coalition, composed mostly of Mormon women, who came to the conference to stand against the ERA.
