Taken from the newly constructed Barge Hall tower on the Washington State Normal School campus, the photograph provides a panoramic view looking down Eighth Street. Many large, comfortable homes that lined Eighth Street at the end of the 19th century were the homes of well established families. The small house on the south side of the street on left was the Charles P. Schnebly home. The large white house in the distance was the home of Judge John B. Davidson and his family. In 1934, this house to move to the corner of Sixth and Sprague. Judge Ralph Kauffman resided in the third house on the right. The Northern Pacific Railroad train can be seen in the background.
