Description

A southern view of Pennsylvania Avenue in Cle Elum, Washington, looking toward Mt. Peoh. The image shows the nearby pine-covered foothills which border the coal mining community. Electric power poles are an indication that the city had electric lights and telephones before paved streets and cement sidewalks. After the discovery of coal and the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the mid-1880s, Cle Elum quickly became the largest of the four northern Kittitas County communities.

Postcard titled: "Pennsylvania Ave., Cle Elum, Wash." Undated handwritten note in pencil with references to war in England, strikes, mountain holidays and hot weather in the county.
