Subject
Books of Hours -- Netherlands -- Illustrations; Illumination of books and manuscripts, Medieval -- Netherlands; Illumination of books and manuscripts, Dutch
Description
A Book of Hours was a devotional prayer book used by the wealthy laity. Often lavishly illustrated, the small format of Books of Hours encouraged private devotions via silent reading, rather than recitation out loud. This leaf from a Dutch Book of Hours shows the tiny pricks from the scribe's ruling stylus, used to evenly space his lines before writing began. In Angular Gothic script. Text shown is unknown.
